Six Ways to Unwind After Work!

After Boris’ announcement, the vast majority of the country will be heading back to work next week and after almost a year of working from home/ barely being in the office, a long day at work could take it out of us that little bit more. Whether you work full-time, part-time, more than one job, short days or long days, we all need that time to unwind, rest and get ready to do it all again the next day. However, it can be really hard to switch off, especially if you’ve got a lot on your mind or on your to-do list, so I thought I would share a list of 6 ways you can unwind after work, to hopefully help you switch off in the evening.

Turn off your Phone:

A lot of our everyday stress and anxieties can stem from having our phones on us all day everyday, we’ve got social media, the news, emails and everything else at our finger tips constantly reminding up of what we’ve got to do at work, the lives other people are living, what is going on with the world; how are we ever meant to just switch off if it’s always there? As soon as you clock off from work, put your phone on silence or, even better, just turn it off so you have no other distractions. Everything else can wait until the morning but your time after work should be for you (obviously with a few exceptions that comes with everyday life).

Listen to a Podcast or your favourite music:

This one has to be my favourite way to spend my free time after work, mainly because it doesn’t take any effort to listen to something, you can pop it on while cooking, getting changed, having a bath or shower, in the car; these are such simple things to do but they have a way of taking out minds off of things. You can also use this time to watch your favourite TV show, YouTuber, film and although this is something we may all do of an evening, even just for an hour or so, it can be a highlight of someones day and some people can’t even switch off to focus on a programme because they’re on their phone (I’m definitely guilty of this sometimes).

Go for a walk:

Now that the clocks have gone forward, the evenings are longer and the weather getting warmer, it’s so much nicer to go for a lovely evening walk; whether it be with a partner, a friend, a sibling, or even alone, it can be a really nice way to end the day. Try and leave your phone at home and just focus on being present in the moment without any other thoughts apart from taking in your surroundings. Or if you’re a lover of podcasts or want to listen to some of your favourite music, take your phone but don’t be scrolling through social media or texting during this time as it wont help you to wind down. I find the best time of day to go for a walk is just before sunset so you can just sit and watch it before heading back.

Have a Bath:

Unwinding after work doesn’t have to be doing something crazy, it can be as simple as just having a nice hot bath or shower. Run yourself a bath, pop in a bath bomb or some oils, light some candles and just switch off for a little while. Leave phone, laptop etc. out of the bathroom, maybe take a book in or pop some music or a trusty old podcast on and take this time to yourself. Obviously with children this can be more difficult, but maybe try and do this once they’ve gone to bed or at a time where you have a free half hour or so.

Make some plans:

This ones probably an obvious one, but I don’t think some people realise the importance of having something in the calendar. It doesn’t matter if you’re making plans for after work or the weekend or for a few weeks time, it’s always important for us to have something to look forward to. This year has been difficult enough not having plans or being able to see friends and family, so hopefully this has taught us the importance of a social life and doing things that make us happy and excited to do. It also just makes those long days at work and hard times all the more worth it, when you’re out having a good time.

Meditate:

My last way that I would recommend to unwind, one that I do try to do myself, is to meditate. Now I know a lot of people don’t really like to do this one, especially if you’re not necessarily spiritual but it is one of the best ways to switch off from the world for a while. You can do this in a quiet room, with some relaxing music, with a guided meditation video that you can find on YouTube; it just depends which you find best for you! You can meditate for as little as 5 minutes or as long as you like (the longer you can, the better you will feel afterwards and the more relaxed you’ll be) so this can fit to anyone’s schedule. A few of the benefits of meditation are that it helps you become more mindful, it reduces unnecessary stress and anxiety and it helps you to be more focused.

So, those were all my tips on how you can unwind and switch off after work; I really hope they help you out and give you the opportunity to relax and make the most of your free time. As always, thank you so much for taking the time to read my blog and I will see you soon with a new one.
